Samajwadi party

Samajwadi Party came into existence on October 4, 1992 in Lucknow under the leadership of Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav. The party gives immense importance to the development of common man and thus adopted the vehicle of the common man – a bicycle as its symbol.

In these two decades, Samajwadi Party has come to power in Uttar Pradesh twice (Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav had been the Chief Minister once before the party was formed) and has tried to bring development and prosperity in the state. The party under the leadership of Shri Mulayam Signh Yadav formed the government in Uttar Pradesh in 1993 and then again in 2003. Samajwadi Party also enjoys the position of being the third largest party in the 15th Lok Sabha.

Samajwadi Party works at the grassroot level for social upliftment and believes in creating a fertile ground for the downtrodden sections of society so that everyone lives in harmony. Samajwadi Party is a mass based party and attracts membership from all sections of society. Samajwadi Party steadfastly stands for communal harmony and secularism as enshrined in our constitution.

The party is founded on the principle socialism, democracy and equality. Samajwadi Party believes in communal harmony and endeavours to create special opportunities for backward sections of society, Muslims and women. Samajwadi Party is organized at the national, state, zila and municipal level across the country.

Samajwadi Party Leader

Ram Manohar Lohia

Ram Manohar Lohia, who was a freedom fighter, socialist and a great Parliamentarian, is the guiding light for the Samajwadi Party. His integrity, his selfless struggle for India's independence and his ability to unite people of all sections of society has greatly influenced our leaders, youth and workers in the party.

Mahatma Gandhi's ideas greatly influenced Lohia, who worked tirelessly during the freedom movement, writing articles against the British and raising awareness against British imperialism in Europe. Lohia was jailed by the British several times during the freedom struggle, and he fought rigorously all his life for social equality.

After India became independent, Ram Manohar Lohia devoted himself to grassroots politics which included farmers cause, development work and fighting against social injustice. His ability to awaken the common people with his fiery articles on satyagraha, and his innate knowledge of social problems made him the foremost socialist leader of India.

Lohia's 'Do or Die' spirit is an inspiration and a guiding force for the Samajwadi Party in its struggle for social upliftment of the poor, backward and socially weaker sections of society.

Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav

Our Netaji as he is respectfully called by party workers – was born in Etawah on November 22, 1939. Netaji, who was greatly influenced by Ram Manohar Lohia, joined the great socialist leader's movement during the 1950s to fight for farmers rights.

Lohia's 'Do or Die' spirit is an inspiration and a guiding force for the Samajwadi Party in its struggle for social upliftment of the poor, backward and socially weaker sections of society.

He first became an MLA in the UP assembly in 1967 and was jailed during the Emergency in 1975. He formed the Samajwadi Party in October, 1992, based on the socialist principles of India's great leader Ram Manohar Lohia. Netaji was appointed India's Defense Minister in 1996 due to his clear thinking on India's emerging role in international politics and great leadership qualities.

A visionary, Netaji held the post of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three times, and implemented policies and took action to ensure that the poor and backward sections of society lived in harmony with the rest, and people from all religions, castes and social backgrounds contributed towards growth of the state.

Under Netaji's leadership, the Samajwadi Party has become an umbrella for people belonging to various sections of society in villages and towns. Netaji has strived to make the Samajwadi Party a vehicle for the downtrodden and neglected section of society.
